Computer graphics is the science of generating images with computers. 3D computer graphics in particular deals with images based on 3D models of virtual objects or virtual worlds. Real-time 3D computer graphics is about producing these images in real time, i.e. in less than 1/30 of a second for one image. Examples are the graphics of computer games, training simulators in virtual environments, virtual prototyping, data visualization, etc. All these applications require high rendering performance, which is usually provided by highly specialized chips (GPUs), which run specialized programs that are called "shaders". This talk will introduce the use of some built-in shaders of the game engine Unity as well as demonstrate how to write your own shaders for new visual effects. On the one hand, you will see that using shaders is no rocket science; on the other hand, you will learn that programming shaders requires some background in mathematics and computer graphics.
